Metro Malta Will Be Free For Maltese Residents; Tourists Must Pay Fare

The Nationalist Party (PN) has proposed that the use of a future National Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) system would be free for Maltese residents, while tourists would be required to pay a fare, as part of a wider plan to address Malta’s persistent traffic congestion problem.

Presenting its vision for a National MRT System, the PN said traffic continues to negatively impact quality of life, families and businesses across the country, arguing that the issue has too often remained confined to political debate rather than long-term action.

The party described the proposed MRT network as the “backbone” of a broader national transport strategy aimed at significantly reducing dependence on private cars.

According to the PN, congestion remains high because many residents still lack reliable and efficient alternatives to driving.

The proposed transport system would include substantial underground sections to avoid adding pressure to densely populated localities.

The project is expected to be partly financed through European Union funds.

PN candidate and engineer Julian Borg said the design is still being finalised, but explained that the system would connect major transport hubs, including routes linking Tas-Sliema and the Airport.

The first proposed line would stretch around 11.5 kilometres with eight stations and trains running every seven minutes.

The PN also pledged to establish a National MRT Unit within its first 100 days in government to begin detailed planning and implementation.
