MEPs Propose Free Personal Item Rule, Delay Compensation & More

Transport MEPs are calling for the retention of the current three hour flight delay threshold for compensation, alongside maintaining existing compensation levels.

They have rejected attempts by EU ministers to raise the delay threshold or reduce payments, arguing that passengers must continue to be properly protected when flights are delayed, cancelled or when boarding is denied.

MEPs are also pushing for clearer and fairer baggage rules. They want passengers to be entitled to carry one personal item and one small piece of hand luggage on board free of charge, ending confusion and additional fees at the gate.

In addition, they believe airlines should not charge for basic administrative issues such as name corrections or check in.

Special attention is given to vulnerable travellers. The proposals would guarantee free adjacent seating for adults accompanying children under 14 and for those assisting passengers with reduced mobility.

Priority boarding and full access to compensation and assistance are also emphasised.

To make enforcement easier, airlines would be required to provide pre-filled compensation and reimbursement forms within 48 hours of disruption.
