MEPs Back Daniel Attard Report On Future EU Tourism Strategy

Daniel Attard has secured the approval of a European Parliament resolution outlining key demands for the European Union’s upcoming sustainable tourism strategy, due to be presented by the European Commission in late June.
The resolution was adopted with 439 votes in favour, 42 against and 129 abstentions, setting out what MEPs expect from the future framework.
A central focus is the regulation of short term rentals, where parliamentarians are calling for clearer EU level rules distinguishing between commercial operators and private individuals who occasionally rent out property.
Attard highlighted the need for a more balanced tourism model across the bloc, warning against excessive pressure on popular destinations while others remain underused.
He called for improved connectivity, particularly through stronger rail links including night trains, as well as better maritime connections to support islands and peripheral regions.
The report also places emphasis on employment within the sector, proposing the introduction of an EU tourism skills card to standardise qualifications and improve worker mobility.
In addition, it calls on the Commission to address gaps in existing environmental legislation, particularly the continued use of single use plastics within the hospitality industry.
The Commission is now expected to present its strategy on 24 June, following delays linked to broader scheduling changes across EU policy files.
