MEP THOMAS BAJADA SAYS IT'S TIME FOR EUROPE TO BAN GAY CONVERSION PRACTICES

During a recent speech in the European Parliament, MEP Thomas Bajada called on European countries to take urgent action to ban gay conversion practices, describing them as harmful and unacceptable.
“These are not isolated stories. These are young Europeans that we have failed to protect,” he said, highlighting that conversion practices continue to take place across Europe despite growing awareness of their psychological and emotional damage.
MEP Bajada pointed to Malta’s example, noting that his country became the first in Europe to ban conversion practices a decade ago. “No one should ever be made to feel they must be corrected. This is not care. This is harm,” he emphasised, stressing the need for a coordinated European approach to protect LGBTQ+ individuals.
He urged the European Union and member states to follow Malta’s lead, framing the ban as a matter of human dignity and fundamental rights. “It’s time for Europe to act. Ban conversion practices,” he concluded, rallying support from fellow lawmakers for legislative measures that safeguard vulnerable communities.
The speech reinforces MEP Bajada’s long-standing commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and reflects ongoing debates in Europe about protecting minors and adults from practices that have been widely condemned by medical and psychological experts.
By calling for a continent-wide ban, he aims to ensure that all young Europeans grow up free from coercion and the harmful effects of conversion therapies.
