MEP Daniel Attard Addresses Euronews Travel & Tourism Summit

MEP Daniel Attard addressed the Euronews Travel & Tourism Summit in Brussels, calling for European investment that supports tourism growth while improving the quality of life of communities that welcome visitors.

Attard, who led the European Parliament’s report on tourism, said the sector’s success should be measured not only by visitor numbers but also by the benefits created for residents.

“Success in tourism means more than record arrivals. It means decent jobs, thriving local businesses and a better quality of life for residents,” he said.

The MEP argued that local authorities should have a leading role in shaping tourism decisions within their communities, while receiving European support to address common challenges.

“Local authorities cannot be left to face European challenges alone. They need the funding, information and practical support to turn their decisions into results,” he said.

Attard also called for increased investment in rail, sea and air connections, as well as local transport infrastructure, particularly for islands and destinations that rely heavily on aviation and maritime links.

He said stronger connectivity would help more towns, villages and islands benefit from tourism, adding that destinations cannot be encouraged to attract visitors if they remain difficult to access.

Speaking about Malta and Gozo, Attard stressed that reliable year-round connectivity is essential for residents, businesses and tourists alike, requiring investment in dependable transport services.
