Men Now Make Up The Majority Of Malta's Population As Over 4,000 Residents Are Aged 90+

New figures released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) offer a closer look at who makes up Malta's growing population.
By the end of 2025, Malta's population reached 588,254, with 53.3% being male and 46.7% female.
The data also shows Malta has an ageing population. People aged 65 and over now make up 18.4% of all residents, while 14.3% are under the age of 18.
There are now 4,005 people aged 90 and over living in Malta, including 2,758 women and 1,247 men. Women outnumber men in the oldest age groups, with females making up almost twice as many residents aged 85 and over.
The report also found that 68.9% of residents are Maltese citizens, while 31.1% are non-Maltese citizens. Most foreign residents are of working age, with the largest groups aged between 30 and 39 years old.
When it comes to where people live, Tas-Sliema remains Malta's most densely populated locality with 18,186 people per square kilometre, followed by Tal-Pietà and L-Isla. On the other hand, L-Għasri, San Lawrenz and L-Imdina have the lowest population densities in the country.
The figures form part of the NSO's latest World Population Day 2026 report, which highlights Malta's changing demographic trends.
