Meeting With The Malta Maritime Forum On The Grand Harbour Revival Plan

Miriam Dalli, Malta’s Minister for the Environment and Energy, met with representatives from the Malta Maritime Forum as part of ongoing consultation meetings on the government’s plan to revive the Grand Harbour.
The meeting also included Gino Cauchi, Chief Executive of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, and the corporation’s chairperson Ryan Fava. Discussions focused on the vision for the future of the harbour and the challenges and opportunities linked to the regeneration project.
Opening the meeting, Godwin Xerri, chairperson of the Malta Maritime Forum, said the consultation was organised to give members of the forum the opportunity to share their views, concerns and expectations about the project. Feedback gathered during the meeting will be compiled into a summary so that it can be considered in the design of the regeneration plan.
Minister Dalli said the government remains committed to consulting stakeholders and listening to the maritime sector as the project develops. She emphasised that open discussion is essential to ensure that the harbour’s historical heritage, current operations and future needs are all safeguarded.
Cauchi noted that the Grand Harbour and surrounding areas have long carried the burden of heavy industrial activity. He said the regeneration project presents an opportunity to give the area a new direction through a modern and sustainable vision.
Fava added that the consultation process is intended to strengthen cooperation with the maritime sector rather than disrupt existing port activities.
The regeneration plan will be carried out in four phases. The first phase will focus on transforming the Marsa waterfront and the site of the former power station into a mixed use area designed to create new economic opportunities while reconnecting the harbour with the public. The project design is being prepared by the international firm Chapman Taylor.
