MDA Warns Budget 2027 Could Lead To Higher Prices For Consumers And Property Buyers
Local

The Malta Development Association (MDA) has welcomed several measures announced in Budget 2027 but warned that increased taxes and fees could eventually lead to higher prices for consumers, including property buyers.

The association praised the government's increased investment and social measures supporting families, widows and pensioners.

However, it raised concerns about rising business expenses, particularly the additional costs of employing foreign workers, warning that these could be passed on to consumers through higher prices.

The MDA also questioned how the new €1,000 Super Bonus would be financed, arguing that rising costs could undermine its benefits for families.

Tourist Taxes And Infrastructure

Reacting to higher tourist eco-taxes, the association insisted that additional revenue should go directly towards improving Malta's tourism infrastructure.

It stressed that higher taxes alone would not attract better-quality tourism, calling instead for cleaner public spaces, improved roads and greater protection of Malta's cultural and natural heritage.

Greener Buildings And Smaller Developers

The MDA also called for stronger incentives for environmentally friendly construction, energy-efficient buildings and smaller property developers.

It argued that sustainable development should be encouraged without placing additional financial burdens on property buyers.

A Long-Term Vision For Malta

Beyond the Budget, the association stressed the need for a clearer national strategy connecting housing, transport, infrastructure, environmental protection and urban planning.

It highlighted everyday problems such as traffic congestion, poor road conditions and waste collection, calling for measurable targets and clear deadlines.

The MDA concluded by welcoming further consultation with the government, stressing that investment today should translate into lasting improvements for businesses, families and future generations.
