Matthew Vella The Winner Of UOM’s World Photography Day

The University of Malta (UM) has revealed the winner of its World Photography Day competition, celebrating the art of photography and unique perspectives on Maltese life.

The top prize was awarded to Matthew Vella, whose dynamic image captures the traditional street horse races in Żebbuġ, Gozo. The photograph vividly conveys movement and energy, with the distant Citadel standing as a silent witness to this centuries-old tradition.

In a post shared on social media, the University praised the winning entry, “When the Village Races: this dynamic photograph captures the traditional street horse races in Żebbuġ, Gozo. The image brims with movement and energy. From the distance, the Citadel overlooks it all, a silent witness to a tradition full of life.”
