Mater Dei Reports Significant Increase In Surgical Procedures

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela announced that by the end of September this year, Mater Dei Hospital and outsourced facilities have seen a significant increase in the number of surgical procedures carried out.
Knee replacement surgeries rose to 890, compared to 390 in 2024, reflecting a major expansion in orthopaedic services.
Endoscopy procedures also grew, reaching 13,059, up from 10,659 last year, while cataract surgeries increased to 4,910 from 4,521 in the same period.
Minister Abela highlighted that these increases demonstrate the government’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare delivery and reducing waiting times for patients.
He emphasised that resources have been strengthened to ensure patients have better access to essential surgical care.
The minister also noted that efforts will continue throughout the year to further enhance these numbers, ensuring that more individuals benefit from timely interventions and improved outcomes.
