The new high-level scanners provide advanced-resolution imaging for the assessment of abdominal, pelvic, musculoskeletal, vascular, breast, and soft tissue organs. They also offer precise guidance for interventional procedures.

Minister Abela explained that the systems incorporate advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, shear-wave elastography for liver fibrosis assessments, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound. One of the scanners will be assigned to the Gastroenterology Department, enabling a specialised bowel ultrasound service for the first time.

“This investment reflects the Government and Ministry’s commitment to ensuring patients in Malta and Gozo have access to the latest medical technologies and the highest standards of care,” said Dr Abela. “Combined with ongoing training and recruitment of radiologists and radiographers, this will help reduce ultrasound waiting lists and further strengthen services offered to the public.”

Dr Martina Schembri, Consultant Gastroenterologist, added, “Thanks to one of these new machines, we will begin offering a Bowel Ultrasound service. This uses both small and large bowel ultrasound to monitor inflammation and patient treatments, helping us provide better care.”
