Mater Dei Hospital Endoscopy Centre Earns European Recognition For Capsule Endoscopy

The Endoscopy Centre at Mater Dei Hospital has been officially recognised by the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) as a Centre for Capsule Endoscopy — an advanced, non-invasive diagnostic procedure.
Through the use of a swallowable capsule, a large number of detailed images of the small intestine are captured in a short period of time, without the need for sedation or discomfort. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients requiring diagnosis of bleeding in the small intestine.
The Minister for Health and Active Ageing, Jo Etienne Abela, highlighted that this procedure allows patients to be examined while continuing with their normal daily routine. He explained that a patient attends their appointment in the morning, swallows the capsule, and the internal examination is recorded via a small external device.

Minister Abela further explained that this type of capsule is used when there is a suspicion that a patient may be suffering from small bowel pathologies, such as those causing low blood levels. He noted that the procedure provides highly detailed and safe diagnostic results for patients.
“I sincerely congratulate our skilled professionals for achieving this certificate of excellence, which is a source of great satisfaction. The recent establishment of the Department of Gastroenterology and Immunology was a strategic move, and we are now witnessing the positive outcomes of this work,” concluded Dr Abela.
