MASKED MEN ESCAPE AFTER ILLEGAL TRAPPING INCIDENT IN QALA

Gozo is facing a surge in environmental crimes, with illegal trapping of birds and other wildlife continuing largely unchecked, the Malta Ranger Unit has warned.

The Rangers reported a welfare concern for several animals in Qala earlier today.

When Police and Animal Welfare officers arrived on the scene, a man was seen fleeing the area, covering his face with a green balaclava, apparently monitoring authorities and Rangers from a distance.

Shortly after, two more individuals emerged from illegal trapping sites, also wearing balaclavas, but were able to escape.

According to the Malta Ranger Unit, these incidents highlight how environmental crime in Gozo has become lucrative and highly organised, with perpetrators equipped with specialised gear and pre-planned escape routes.

The lack of a dedicated Environmental Protection Unit Police in Gozo has allowed such crimes to continue with near-total impunity.

The Rangers emphasised the urgent need to increase patrols and resources for environmental protection, calling on authorities to act. “Gozo is STILL without Environmental Protection Unit Police. How long will we have to wait until this impunity ends?” the unit said.

The Malta Ranger Unit pledged to continue monitoring the island, but stressed that stronger support is required to protect nature and biodiversity from ongoing illegal activity.
