The Ministers for Culture, Arts and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, and for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme, Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, recently visited the Marsa Arts and Culture Hub to observe the progress of ongoing works.

The visit included the Chairman of Festivals Malta, Aaron Zahra, the Chief Executive Officer, Frans Agius, and the Artistic Director of the Carnival, Jason Busuttil.

The project covers 15,000 square metres and is one of the largest infrastructure investments undertaken by Festivals Malta. It is partially funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is designed to strengthen Malta’s cultural sector by creating a modern and flexible space dedicated to the arts.

Current works focus on completing the demolition of the former government garage, along with excavation and foundational construction for the hub.

Minister Bonnici described the project as a clear example of the Government’s commitment to culture as a key part of national development.

He said the hub will provide new opportunities for Maltese artists and act as a vibrant community space where creativity can thrive.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi added that European funds are being used to create modern facilities that benefit both artists and the wider public. He highlighted that the hub will support urban regeneration and contribute to the sustainable development of Malta.

The Marsa Arts and Culture Hub will include Carnival workshops, a music rehearsal centre, a dance centre, and areas for costume design and parade preparation.

Additional facilities will include a museum dedicated to Carnival heritage, a theatre for live performances, rehearsal studios, and the new offices of Festivals Malta.

Aaron Zahra emphasised that the hub will strengthen Malta’s cultural infrastructure, while Jason Busuttil noted that it will provide safe, modern facilities and an immersive experience for visitors.

The hub is expected to become a national centre for creativity, supporting artistic expression and offering cultural, educational, and tourism benefits.
