Marine Biologist Warns Of Invasive Jellyfish Spread In Maltese Waters

Marine biologist Alan has drawn attention to the growing presence of the upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea andromeda) at the Salini nature reserve, warning of the ecological risks posed by invasive alien species (IAS).

Hordes of the unusual jellyfish, which rest on the seabed with their bell facing downward, have been recorded within the protected site. Although considered a threat to native biodiversity, the species is also being harvested for biotechnological purposes through the EU-funded WASTE2TASTE project, which seeks innovative ways to repurpose marine resources.

“The upside-down jellyfish was first recorded in Maltese waters back in 2009/2010 by my colleague Patrick Vella,” Alan explained. “Since then, its spread has highlighted the urgent need to balance ecological management with opportunities for sustainable use.”
