Marine Biologist Discovers Diamond Lizardfish In Malta

Marine biologist Alan Deidun has announced the discovery of the diamond lizardfish, also known as the redbarret lizardfish (Synodus synodus), marking the third new fish species recorded in the past year.

Deidun expressed his gratitude to co-authors, as well as to local contributors who helped make the discovery possible, including fisherman Melchiore Camilleri and SCUBA diver Edmond Cuschieri, whose citizen science records were instrumental in the research.

This latest discovery follows the addition of the diamond pufferfish (Lagocephalus guentheri) and the wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) to Malta’s marine records over the last 12 months, all recorded through the Spot the Alien Fish citizen science campaign.
