mapESD Launched To Strengthen Sustainable Education Across Sectors In Malta

The Malta Association of Professionals in Education for Sustainable Development (mapESD) was officially launched during a conference on 16 January at the HSBC Innovation Hub, bringing together representatives from education, civil society, business, academia and public institutions to discuss the role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Malta’s future.
Speakers highlighted that while ESD initiatives are already taking place across workplaces, NGOs and educational settings, efforts remain fragmented and often reliant on individual commitment.
The conference called for a more structured, collaborative and professional approach.
Opening the event, President Mariosa Caruana explained that mapESD emerged from the shared experience of ESD graduates seeking a platform to continue collaborating and strengthening practice.
Vice President Prof. Mark C. Mifsud reviewed the development of ESD in Malta, while research findings underpinning the association were presented by Marika Tabone and Maureen Vella.
Addressing attendees, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli said, Education is central to achieving Malta’s sustainability goals, because it equips people with the knowledge and skills to act responsibly, think critically, and contribute meaningfully within their communities.’
The association aims to foster collaboration, professional learning and stronger links between policy and practice.
