A German lift manufacturer has found itself at the centre of the recent Louvre Museum heist after one of its machines was used by the thieves to make their escape.

Instead of shying away from the incident, Böcker, based in Werne, has launched a new advertising campaign making light of the situation.

The company shared a social media post showing its furniture lift extended to a balcony outside the Gallery of Apollo, where the robbery took place.

Beneath the image, the caption reads: “When you need to move fast. The Böcker Agilo transports your treasures weighing up to 400kg at 42m per minute – quiet as a whisper.”

Video footage from the robbery shows the suspects climbing the mechanical lift after stealing jewels worth around €88m (£76m).

Managing Director Alexander Böcker told AFP that once it was clear no one had been hurt, the firm decided to use “a touch of humour” to highlight its products. He stressed, however, that the crime was “completely reprehensible”.

Böcker said he recognised the lift from news reports and explained it had been sold to a French customer who hires out such equipment. The thieves are believed to have stolen it during a recent demonstration.
