'Manoel Island Will Be Returned To The Public:' Moviment Graffiti Welcomes News

Activist group Moviment Graffiti and the Manoel Island: Post Għalina Campaign have welcomed the government’s announcement that an agreement has been reached with MIDI plc to return Manoel Island and Fort Tigné to public ownership.
In a statement, the campaign described the development as a “positive step,” noting it comes less than a year after its launch, during which it had called for a renegotiation of the emphyteusis agreement governing the site’s development.
The group said the outcome confirms its position that the island could be returned to the public without excessive financial burden.
While commending both the government and MIDI for reaching what it described as a swift and diplomatic agreement, the campaign emphasised that its work is ongoing.
It reiterated its vision for Manoel Island to be transformed into a national park that integrates natural, historical and community elements.
The group also welcomed action by the Planning Authority to halt what it described as illegal development works on the former Gżira FC pitch, calling for a holistic masterplan for the site.
Campaigners said the outcome highlights the impact of sustained public advocacy.
