Manoel Island is on its way to becoming Malta’s next national park, as extensive maintenance works begin on the island.

The works are being carried out by the Cleansing and Maintenance Division in collaboration with Project Green, with the aim of making the island safer and more accessible while protecting its historical and environmental features.

Earlier this year, a historic agreement returned Manoel Island to public ownership after years of public pressure and debate.

Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli said these works marked the beginning of a larger plan to open Manoel Island to the Maltese public and make it “a place where families can spend their leisure time.”

During the clean-up, the Cleansing and Maintenance Division will be clearing overgrown vegetation, pruning trees, and removing waste and graffiti, with the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, saying the initiative will address years of accumulated waste and neglect.
