Manoel Island: Post Għalina has welcomed and fully supported a proposal by the Malta Co-operative Federation (MCF) to explore a community-led model for the management of Manoel Island.

The campaign said the MCF’s proposal to place the community at the heart of the island’s future aligns with the vision outlined in its Manoel Island Park Consultation Response, which was developed following more than 200 hours of discussions during a series of public consultation events.

The consultation process concluded a year ago with a public walk at Manoel Island on 12 October 2025, following the campaign’s efforts to return the historic island to public hands.

“Today, Manoel Island belongs to us. But it is not yet a place for us,” the campaign said, adding that transforming the island into a public space will take time.

Manoel Island: Post Għalina welcomed the involvement of Heritage Malta in preserving and restoring the island’s built heritage, while also highlighting the importance of protecting its natural heritage, social value and emotional connection with the community.

The campaign said it is looking forward to the publication of Manoel Island’s masterplan following Project Green’s public consultation and expert input on the site’s future.

It also backed the idea of establishing Manoel Island’s stewardship as a community cooperative, arguing that direct public involvement would help protect the island’s non-commercial identity and ensure that any income generated through sustainable activities is reinvested into its upkeep.

The campaign, led by Moviment Graffitti and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, is calling on the Government to take concrete steps towards placing the community at the centre of Manoel Island’s future.
