Man Denied Bail After Reportedly Sexually Abusing Dog In Gudja Field

A 50 year old man has been remanded in custody after he was reportedly caught sexually abusing a dog in a field in Gudja.

Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said expressed her disbelief and anger at the case, saying that the Directorate for Animal Wellbeing was immediately on the case.

‘In our country, there is no place for any form of cruelty or abuse towards animals. Without commenting on the merits of the case currently before the court, the message is clear: anyone who abuses animals must face justice and all the consequences provided for by law’, said Bugeja Said.

The man, a resident of Gudja, pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, as well as to trespassing private property.

A police inspector informed the court that a report was received on September 15th at around 8:25pm. Officers subsequently went on site and found the man and the dog in a field.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the man approaching the animal and seizing it, with the dog reportedly heard whimpering. The accused also reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was stopped and arrested.

Similar acts were also reported from August 28th, caught on CCTV once again. The accused reportedly admitted to having an alcohol problem and admitted to being the person in the footage when shown the video.

The defence requested bail, but the prosecution objected, citing the seriousness of the offence, the accused’s lack of ties to Malta, and the fact that two witnesses have yet to testify.
