Malta has recorded the highest gender pension gap in the European Union, with women aged 65 and over receiving on average 40.3% less than men in 2024.

The figure places Malta at the top of the EU ranking, well above the overall EU average gap of 24.5%.

At the other end of the scale, Estonia recorded the smallest gap at 5.6%, followed by Slovakia at 8.4% and Hungary at 9.6%.

Eurostat also measures the gender pension gap using median pension values, which represent the middle point between higher and lower pensions and are less affected by extreme figures. Across the EU, the median pension for women was 24.9% lower than that for men.

The largest median gaps were found in Luxembourg at 43.3%, Spain at 41.1%, and the Netherlands at 39.6%. The smallest were recorded in Estonia at -0.3%, Hungary at 0.4%, and Denmark at 2.7%.

Comparisons between average and median calculations show notable differences in some countries.

Denmark recorded a 12.9 percentage point higher gap in average pensions compared with median figures, while Spain and Luxembourg showed significantly higher gaps when measured by median values.
