Maltese triathlete James Camilleri has been forced to postpone his Triple Ironman ambitions after suffering a serious cycling accident just weeks before he was due to compete in Austria.

The 31-year-old athlete was aiming to become only the second Maltese competitor to complete a Triple Ironman, an extreme endurance challenge that demands months of rigorous training, strict nutrition, commitment and significant personal sacrifices. On top of this insane achievement, Camilleri was also aiming to raise money for Caritas.

Camilleri was injured while cycling along Triq San Pawl in the direction of Xemxija after hitting a large pothole, causing him to fall from his bike. At the time of the accident, he was completing the 100th kilometre of a planned 180-kilometre training ride.

He was subsequently taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where medical examinations and X-rays revealed a fractured clavicle (collarbone). Camilleri underwent surgery and has since started his recovery journey.

The setback came just five weeks after he delivered an outstanding performance at the Bretzel Ultra Triathlon in Colmar, France, finishing fifth among 18 athletes in the Double Ironman event. He completed a gruelling 7.6km swim, 360km cycling stage and 84.4km run in 28 hours and 28 minutes.

In a Facebook post, Camilleri expressed his disappointment at having to delay his Triple Ironman goal while highlighting the need for improved road infrastructure, claiming the potholes on the road contributed to his accident.

He also praised the dedication and professionalism of the staff at Mater Dei Hospital, thanking them for the care and support provided during his treatment.
