Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that the Government will include the protection of Maltese traditions and pastimes in the Constitution to ensure they are safeguarded for future generations. He said this move will guarantee that what nearly happened in Parliament in recent days will never happen again.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Guarantee for Maltese Hobbies, Sports, and Traditions” at the San Ġorġ Philharmonic Society in Bormla, Abela said that hobbies, sports, and festas unite Maltese families, and the Labour Party in Government will continue defending them so they can be enjoyed for years to come.

He also announced new investments in sports and leisure, including land identified in northern Malta for a new camping site built to high standards. Abela said the Government has already invested €29 million to save musical societies’ clubs and will soon launch a scheme to assist festa organisations struggling with loans and interest payments.

Work is also progressing on the Marsa horse racing track, which will soon reopen for enthusiasts, with major upgrades to be completed by next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg and PL Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba also spoke during the event, saying the Labour Party is the only real guarantee for those who value Malta’s traditions and cultural pastimes. They criticised the Opposition for proposing laws that could have harmed these activities.

Various speakers from sports, festa, and cultural organisations praised the Government’s support, saying these traditions not only strengthen communities but also contribute to the economy, environment, and mental well-being.
