Private yachts flying the Maltese flag will now benefit from special privileges when travelling between ports in the United States, following a new agreement between Malta and American authorities.

The development means Maltese-registered yachts can apply for a special Cruising Licence, allowing them to travel between American ports with fewer customs procedures and exemptions from certain fees.

The licence can be issued for up to one year and may be renewed.

Previously, Maltese-registered yachts did not enjoy the same privileges as vessels registered in several other countries, putting them at a competitive disadvantage.

Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett announced the development, describing it as a historic achievement for Malta's maritime industry.

According to Bonett, the agreement will make Malta's maritime register more attractive to international yacht owners, particularly those with vessels exceeding 24 metres in length.

The decision was officially published by US authorities on 29 October 2026, although the privileges have been applicable since 10 June.

The agreement follows years of discussions and diplomatic efforts between Malta and the United States.

Bonett said the government will continue working to attract more yacht registrations, create new opportunities for the maritime industry and strengthen Malta's international reputation.

The development also means that yacht owners choosing to register their vessels under the Maltese flag can now enjoy additional benefits when sailing in American waters.
