Maltese prison officers and inmates are travelling to Rome to participate in the Pope’s Jubilee for Prisoners, being held as part of the Holy Year 2025.

The initiative is being described as a unique and historic experience, bringing together prison staff and persons in custody in a shared journey centred on rehabilitation, personal responsibility and hope. The Jubilee for Prisoners forms part of the Vatican’s wider programme of events for the Holy Year, which places a strong emphasis on mercy, reconciliation and second chances.

In a post shared by the Malta Correctional Services Agency, the initiative was presented as an opportunity to promote values that extend beyond confinement, encouraging reflection and positive change among participants. The Agency highlighted the importance of such experiences in supporting the reintegration process and fostering a sense of dignity and purpose.

The participation of both staff and inmates is intended to strengthen mutual understanding and reinforce the rehabilitative role of correctional institutions.
