Maltese Police Sergeant Reaches Everest Base Camp In Support Of Terrorism Victims

Maltese Police Sergeant Ryan Mifsud Schembri has just successfully completed a demanding Himalayan expedition, reaching Mount Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
Ryan, who has served within the Malta Police Force for 19 years, previously served with the Special Intervention Unit (SWAT) and the Malta Counter Terrorism Unit, and currently works as a Specialist at Europol's European Counter Terrorism Centre in the Netherlands.
More information about his professional background can be found here: on news articles which may be found on the page he is running for the initiative.
Starting from Lukla, Ryan trekked through the Himalayas for approximately eight to ten hours a days for 8 straight days, eventually reaching Mount Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres above sea level, before continuing to Kala Patthar at approximately 5,600 metres.
The expedition required considerable physical preparation, endurance and determination, taking him through remote mountain settlements, steep and challenging terrain, and increasingly thin air. At altitudes above 5,000 metres, the amount of available oxygen is roughly half that experienced at sea level.
The achievement was not undertaken solely as a personal adventure. Ryan also used the expedition to raise funds and awareness for the Victim Support Europe Terrorism Response Network, supporting those affected by terrorism.
