Maltese residents are travelling more than ever, with a total of 205,817 outbound trips recorded between January and March 2026, a strong 13.5% increase compared to the same period last year.

This rise shows how travel is becoming a regular part of life, with people not only travelling more frequently but also staying abroad longer. In fact, total nights spent reached 1.6 million, up by 23.2%, with the average trip lasting nearly eight nights.

Holiday travel remains the main reason people leave the island, followed by visits to friends and relatives. Most travellers fall within the 25–44 age group, showing that working-age adults are driving this surge.

Italy continues to lead as the top destination, highlighting how familiar European hotspots still dominate, even as travel keeps expanding.
