Malta recorded a lower level of trust in others than the European Union average in 2025, according to new figures on social trust among people aged 16 and over by Eurostat.
The average rating of trust in others across the EU stood at 5.8 on a scale from 0, meaning no trust at all, to 10, meaning complete trust. In Malta, the average rating was 5.0.
The figures measure how much confidence people place in others generally, rather than in specific groups or institutions.
The highest levels were registered in Romania at 7.5, whereas Cyprus registered the lowest at 3.5, followed by France at 4.0.
