With Malta's growing population, increasing traffic and crowded public spaces, could more residents be looking to escape the island for a few days? According to the latest figures published by the National Statistics Office (NSO), residents of Malta are travelling abroad more frequently than last year.

Between January and September 2026, residents made 704,426 trips abroad, an increase of 6.6% compared to the same period in 2025.

That's over 700,000 trips in just nine months!

During the summer months alone, between July and September, residents made 284,486 trips abroad, an increase of 5.1% compared to last year.

But could Malta's growing population and the feeling of overcrowding be encouraging more people to travel?

With traffic congestion, busy beaches and crowded entertainment areas, travelling abroad could offer some residents a much-needed break from everyday life on the island.

Interestingly, people aged between 25 and 44 accounted for the largest share of summer trips, making up 44.4% of the total.

Italy remained the favourite destination, accounting for 38.9% of trips abroad during the summer months.

However, while the statistics confirm that overseas travel is increasing, they do not reveal whether overcrowding is actually one of the reasons why people are choosing to leave Malta temporarily.
