Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Darren Carabott represented Malta at the Inter-parliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union, held in Dublin, Ireland, on 24 and 25 September as part of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The conference brought together parliamentary representatives from across the EU to discuss a range of economic and financial issues, including how the Multiannual Financial Framework and the EU's own resources package can support investment and social cohesion. Delegates also examined the challenge of balancing fiscal responsibility with flexibility and social convergence while addressing wider macroeconomic pressures, as well as strengthening the euro's global role and advancing Europe's digital sovereignty.

During a plenary session focusing on fiscal responsibility and economic governance, Carabott highlighted the importance of improving financial literacy across the European Union. He said elected representatives have a responsibility not only to manage public finances responsibly but also to ensure proper scrutiny of public spending to support transparent and sustainable fiscal policies.

Carabott argued that while economic and financial matters are often viewed as technical subjects, politicians have a duty to explain them in a way that helps citizens understand how they affect everyday life. He stressed the importance of promoting greater awareness of responsible public spending, accountability and transparency, while encouraging people to consider the long-term impact of public debt and strategic investments. He also referred to defence spending within the wider European context, while acknowledging Malta's constitutional neutrality.

He went on to underline the importance of communicating the benefits of the European Single Market, membership of the eurozone and the principle of free movement, saying these achievements should be better understood by the public.

Concluding his address, Carabott urged policymakers to remain committed to the principles that support economic stability and prosperity. He called on political leaders to play a more active role in informing citizens about economic issues and warned against becoming complacent when discussing matters that have a direct impact on people's lives.
