Maltese Parliamentary Delegation At 12th IPU Global Conference Of Young Parliamentarians In Uzbekistan

Malta's parliamentary delegation concluded its participation in the 12th IPU Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with contributions focusing on human rights, sustainable development, youth economic rights and political participation.

The delegation, made up of MPs Mariah Meli and Annabelle Cilia, took part in a series of discussions and training sessions aimed at strengthening the role of young parliamentarians in addressing global challenges.

Mariah Meli attended a training session on combating violence against women in politics, where participants examined practical responses to harassment and violence targeting parliamentarians.

Drawing on her own experience, Meli said that women in politics continue to face different forms of abuse, including harassment, which can have a profound impact on those serving in public life. She stressed the importance of recognising such behaviour and fostering a political culture based on respect and dignity.

Meli also underlined the role of education and the responsible use of social media in tackling violence against women in politics.

She said that increasing awareness among young people can help promote respectful online behaviour and ensure that digital platforms become part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem. She added that respect should extend not only to elected representatives but also to their families, who are often affected by hostility directed at those in public office.

Meanwhile, Annabelle Cilia participated in the Unconference, where she contributed to discussions on the human rights of women in situations of communal conflict and war. She outlined three priorities for protecting women's rights: prevention, accountability and survivor support.

Cilia stressed the need to tackle discrimination and harmful social norms, strengthen justice systems to hold perpetrators accountable, and provide survivors with access to healthcare, psychological support, legal assistance, education and employment opportunities.

The conference concluded with the adoption of the Outcome Document, reaffirming the commitment of young parliamentarians to promoting human rights, justice and dignity for all.
