Maltese More Anxious Than Europeans, But Feel Less Anger

According to a new Eurobarometer Survey for 2026, 505 Maltese among 26,421 total European Union citizens were interviewed about their emotional states.

Asked about their perspectives for the future, 30% of Maltese, compared to 21% of EU citizens, feel anxiety as their primary emotional state.

However, 8% of Maltese, compared to 15%, felt anger as their primary emotional state. 29% of Maltese felt uncertainty, which is much less than the EU’s 44%.

42% of Maltese feel hopeful, 37% feel confident and 30% feel serene. 5% feel impotent, whereas 21% feel frustrated.

54% of Maltese interviewed feel pessimistic about the future of the world, compared to 58% of EU citizens’ response. 40% feel optimistic, compared to 38% of EU.

When it comes to Malta, 73% felt optimistic of their own country, compared to 24% of pessimistic opinion. This is much higher than the average 58% of EU citizens feeling optimistic of their country.
