Thomas Bajada, Maltese Member of the European Parliament from the Labour Party, has been appointed Rapporteur of the European Parliament on the economic dimension of the new National and Regional Partnership Plans under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034.

The framework will shape how EU funds are allocated to Malta over the coming decade.

In his new role, Bajada will lead Parliament’s position on how EU financing is structured and managed across Member States, placing Malta at the heart of negotiations that will determine investment priorities for the EU’s seven-year budget cycle.

Commenting on the Commission’s proposals, Bajada warned that the emerging structure risks shifting EU funding away from social investment, environmental protection and family well-being, as greater emphasis is placed on defence and industrial competitiveness.

He noted that the proposed Partnership Plans consolidate policy areas previously central to Europe’s cohesion model, while other parts of the budget are being redirected towards geopolitical and industrial priorities.

As Rapporteur and member of the S&D negotiating team, Bajada stressed that the permanent realities of islands must be fully recognised.

He held consultations in Malta and Gozo with key stakeholders, reaffirming his commitment to a fair, forward-looking financial framework that safeguards Malta’s interests.
