Maltese MEP Peter Agius has announced a series of amendments to the proposed new Erasmus+ regulation aimed at securing fairer treatment and greater opportunities for Maltese and Gozitan participants in the European Union’s flagship education programme.

Speaking on Erasmus Day, Agius highlighted the challenges faced by students from island states, particularly regarding travel reimbursements. He argued that Maltese participants are unfairly disadvantaged because, unlike many of their counterparts in continental Europe, they cannot benefit from “green travel” options and must rely on air transport.

Under his proposals, the European Commission would be required to guarantee full travel cost reimbursement for participants from Malta, recognising the country’s unique geographical realities.

Agius also called for increased Erasmus opportunities for citizens of island regions, including additional mobility placements and tailored support measures. He said island residents often face higher costs and logistical barriers when studying, training or working abroad.

The amendments seek to ensure that Erasmus+ remains an inclusive programme that offers equal opportunities regardless of geographical location.
