Maltese MEP Daniel Attard Interviewed By BBC News On US-Iran Conflict

MEP Daniel Attard was interviewed by BBC News as the Vice President for the European Parliament for Iran about the ongoing conflict between US and Israel against Iran.
During his interview, Attard said that the reference by US President Donald Trump of not ‘dealing with Winston Churchill’ when it comes to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, reminds us of international order which were needed after the Second World War.
‘I’d rather focus on that, rather than the specific comments made about the specific European leaders’, he said.
The US, and Europe, also the UK, have shared fundamental values and decades of strategic partnership. I am sure, and I trust, that the transatlantic relationship will endure beyond any single crisis because it is stronger than any single moment or crisis.’
Asked about the UK and France’s position that the action is not legal, Attard said that there are serious legal questions about this military action.
‘But we must not lose sight of where the root causes of this crisis lies. The Iranian regime has for decades destabilised the region, sponsored militias and repressed its own people.’
‘Sovereignty cannot be used as a shield by a regime that has killed and imprisoned its own people to stay in power.’
Speaking as a parliamentarian on behalf of the European Union, he said that it should push towards diplomacy and de-escalation, and that by the EU standing up for its own principles it can urge the US and Israel to listen and adopt a diplomatic solution.
