Maltese Labour MEPs Wear Red to Support Palestine at EU State of the Union

Maltese Labour MEPs wore red on Wednesday to show solidarity with Gaza during the European Parliament’s annual State of the Union address in Strasbourg.
Alex Agius Saliba, Thomas Bajada, and Daniel Attard joined other left-leaning MEPs in holding a minute of silence at the entrance of the plenary chamber in memory of the victim of the conflict.
The symbolic act was coordinated by The Left group in the European Parliament and also involved members of the Socialist and Democrats (S&D) and the Greens.
The gesture came just before European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her annual State of the Union speech, where she reviewed the Commission’s work so far and set out priorities for the year ahead.
Daniel Attard has been among the most outspoken on the issue, previously accusing the European Parliament of “turning a blind eye to genocide” by failing to take stronger action on the war in Gaza.
Earlier this week, he renewed his calls for an EU-wide arms embargo on Israel and for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
While Nationalist MEP Peter Agius did not take part in the red-wearing action, he still voiced support for the cause, posting on social media that he welcomed the Commission’s strong words on Ukraine but hoped von der Leyen would show equal emphasis and condemnation regarding the violence in Palestine.
