Maltese Going Abroad More Than Ever

Maltese residents travelled abroad in record numbers during the fourth quarter of 2025, with outbound tourists reaching 268,619, an increase of 19.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
Italy remained the most popular destination, accounting for 32.2% of all trips undertaken between October and December.
During the quarter, 174,618 trips were made for holiday purposes, while 63,261 were for visiting friends and relatives.
Travellers aged between 25 and 44 made up the largest share at 47.2%, followed by those aged 45 to 64 at 30.2%.
Travel to EU countries increased by 16.0%, while trips to non EU destinations rose by 29.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.
Total nights spent abroad reached 1,999,303, up by 29.7%. More than half of these nights, 55.3%, were spent in non rented accommodation. The average length of stay stood at 7.4 nights.
Expenditure also rose significantly, with outbound tourists spending an estimated €270.6 million during the quarter, equivalent to an average of €1,007 per person.
Across the whole of 2025, outbound trips totalled 929,645, marking a 10.2% increase over 2024. Total nights spent abroad increased by 20.3% to 6.9 million, while overall expenditure rose by 18.5% to €952.4 million.
