Maltese Film ‘Żejtune’ Selected For Gothenburg Film Festival

Żejtune, the new feature film by Maltese filmmaker Alex Camilleri, has been selected for the International Competition at the Gothenburg Film Festival, where it will have its world premiere on 29 January 2026.
The screening will take place during the festival’s forty ninth edition in Sweden, marking an important milestone for the director following the success of his debut film Luzzu.
The film will compete alongside productions from around the world in the International Competition section, where audiences vote to determine the Best International Film.
Founded in 1979, the Gothenburg Film Festival is the largest in Scandinavia and one of the world’s leading audience focused festivals, attracting more than 270,000 visits in 2025.
Żejtune tells the story of Mar, played by Michela Farrugia, a young woman determined to leave Malta behind. Following the death of her estranged mother, she plans to sell inherited land, but her journey leads her to Nenu, portrayed by 82 year old għana singer Nenu Borg in his screen debut. His music draws her into traditions she hoped to escape.
Camilleri said Gothenburg was the ideal place to launch the film, describing it as a work meant to be experienced together on the big screen. The film will be released in Maltese cinemas in the spring.
