Maltese Film ‘Żejtune’ Officially Premieres Locally

The Maltese feature film Żejtune, directed by Alex Camilleri, marked its Malta premiere on Wednesday evening at Eden Cinemas in St Julian’s, following its international debut earlier this year.
The event brought together cast and crew, alongside industry professionals, funders and invited guests, for a special screening ahead of the film’s nationwide release.
Żejtune has already gained international attention after premiering at the Göteborg Film Festival and attracting strong interest at the European Film Market during the Berlin International Film Festival.
It has since secured distribution in fourteen countries across Europe and beyond, signalling growing recognition for Maltese cinema on the global stage.
Set in contemporary Malta, the film follows Mar, played by Michela Farrugia, a young woman preparing to leave the island after inheriting land from her estranged mother.
As she navigates the process of claiming and selling the property, she encounters Nenu, portrayed by renowned għana singer Nenu Borg in his screen debut at the age of 82. Through this unexpected connection, Mar is gradually drawn into the island’s cultural traditions.
The cast also includes Michael Azzopardi and veteran actress Frida Cauchi. The premiere supported Din l-Art Ħelwa, reflecting the film’s themes of heritage and identity.
Produced as an international collaboration, Żejtune will be released in cinemas across Malta and Gozo on 8 April 2026, with additional Q&A screenings scheduled in Gozo and Valletta ahead of its release.
