Maltese Drivers Are Turning To Motorcycles To Beat Traffic

With Malta’s roads getting busier and daily traffic becoming an even bigger headache, especially during school rush hour in winters, motorcycles are increasingly seen as one way of getting around the congestion.

New figures tabled in Parliament show that tens of thousands of drivers in Malta already hold licences allowing them to ride motorcycles.

MP Anthony Agius Decelis asked Transport Minister Chris Bonett how many people currently hold motorcycle licences, broken down by category.

As of the end of May 2026, the figures stood at:

Category A: 30,503

Category A1: 33,839

Category A2: 31,190

Category AM: 324,585

Category A is the full motorcycle licence, while A1 covers motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW. A2 allows motorcycles up to 35kW, while AM mainly covers mopeds and light quadricycles.

For many commuters, motorcycles can offer a quicker and more practical way of navigating Malta’s increasingly congested roads, particularly during the morning and afternoon rush.

Agius Decelis also asked whether further incentives are planned to encourage more people to use motorcycles and electric bikes.

Would you consider switching to a motorcycle to avoid Malta’s traffic?
