Maltese Filmmaker Releases Award-Winning Short Film, Resaca
Local

Maltese filmmaker Joe Borg is making his mark on the international stage with 'Resaca,' a short film that blends humour and heartbreak to explore the universality of grief.

Written in the winter of 2023 and shot in East London in March 2024, the project came together over an intense two-day shoot, followed by six months in the edit before its completion in late 2024.

'Resaca' follows Ryan, a hungover young man, and his new neighbour Fran, an Argentinian woman with limited English.

What begins as an awkward walk gradually reveals a shared emotional core: both are grieving profound personal losses.

Through subtle performances and quiet moments, the film highlights how connection can transcend language, showing that grief, in many ways, is a universal language.

The filmmaker’s Maltese heritage plays a key role in shaping this perspective. Growing up between cultures, he developed a sensitivity to how people communicate beyond words, through gesture, tone, and presence; elements that are central to the film’s emotional impact.

Since its release, 'Resaca' has screened at 16 international festivals, winning two awards, and is now featured on Omeleto, bringing this distinctly Maltese voice to a global audience.
