Malta’s President Addresses European Court Of Human Rights

H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono addressed the European Court of Human Rights, in Strasbourg, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights.

In her address, the President noted how over the years the European Court of Human Rights, “has served as a legal and moral compass for Europe, anchoring democracy, safeguarding rights, and providing a common European identity based on justice, responsibility and mutual respect.”

While acknowledging the importance and change that this Court’s sentences have brought, including for Malta, the President pointed out that it is everyone’s responsibility, our duty, to ensure that the importance of this Court is preserved and strengthened, so that, “the European Convention on Human Rights continues to ensure a continent where law reigns over violence, where rights prevail over terror, and where dignity for one means dignity for all.”

The ceremony was also addressed by the President of the ECHR, Mattias Guyomar, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Theodoros Rousopoulos.
