Malta’s Oldest Society Gets A Fresh Start

One of Malta’s oldest groups, the Soċjetà Agrarja, has been saved from closing down. The society, which started in 1844, helps farmers and teaches people about Malta’s farming history. For many years, it also helped run the big agricultural show at Buskett during the Imnarja feast.

Recently, the society was in trouble. Not enough people were helping out, and it nearly shut down. But in June 2025, a new team stepped in to take charge and keep it going.
The new President, Mr Lucas Micallef, is now leading the group. He is joined by Mr Darryl Grech as Secretary, and Mr Daniel Bonello as Treasurer. Two new members, Mr Michael Desira and Mr Dillon Polidano, also joined the team.
Mr Micallef said the society is not just old, it is important for today and the future. The team wants to use social media, start school activities, and invite more people to take part.
The society also thanked Dr Joe Borg, who was President for over 25 years, and helped keep things going through hard times.
Now, the Soċjetà Agrarja is working on exciting new plans while still protecting Malta’s farming past. It hopes to get more young people interested in the countryside, animals, plants, and traditions.
