Malta’s First Community-Owned Food Shop Has Landed; And It’s Changing The Way We Eat

A new wave of food shopping has arrived in Malta; one that puts people, local farmers, and genuine Maltese produce at the heart of every basket.
Meet The Food Coop, Malta’s first community-owned food co-operative, built on one simple idea: what if shopping for your food could also support your community?
Unlike traditional stores, The Food Coop is not owned by a single company or investor, it’s owned by its members. That means the people who shop there are also the ones shaping its future. Members can vote on decisions, propose new ideas, and help direct where the co-op grows next.
Every euro spent helps Maltese farmers keep producing, strengthens local supply chains, and ensures that the freshest local products stay accessible to everyone.
The Food Coop celebrates Malta’s land and its hardworking producers. Inside, shoppers will find seasonal Maltese fruit and vegetables, certified local honey, extra virgin olive oil, and locally sourced meats like beef, pork, and lamb, all proudly grown and produced right here on our islands.
And because it’s community-owned, prices are fair for both the farmer and for the consumer. You’ll always know exactly where your food is coming from.
Members enjoy access to affordable prices, transparency about where their food comes from, and the chance to have a real say in how the shop is run. Plus, for every euro spent, members collect points that will later turn into patronage refunds, a fair return for supporting local producers.
Becoming a member of The Food Coop couldn’t be easier. A one-time contribution gives you a share in the co-operative, meaning you’re not just shopping local, you’re owning local.
Everyone is welcome to shop at The Food Coop, members and non-members alike. Whether you’re picking up fresh vegetables for the week, local honey for breakfast, or Maltese olive oil for your next meal, you’ll find it all under one roof.
The store is easy to reach, located right inside the Pitkalija area in Ta’ Qali, Malta’s home of fresh produce, and open throughout the week for the community to enjoy.
The Food Coop isn’t just redefining how Malta shops, it’s reimagining what community means. It’s a space where farmers, families, and food lovers come together to create something that lasts.
Because when we shop local, we all grow together.
Visit The Food Coop at Pitkalija, Ta’ Qali, open from 08:00 till 19:00 on weekdays, and 08:00 to 13:00 on weekends!
