Malta’s Basketball Women Topple Cyprus To Secure Top Group Spot

The Malta Women’s National Basketball team triumphed over Cyprus with an 82-71 victory in overtime, securing the top spot in their group and advancing to the semi-finals of the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries. The match, held as part of the 2024 championship, saw Malta maintain their perfect record despite a tough challenge from Cyprus.
Malta initially led by winning the first two quarters, 20-16 and 14-13. However, Cyprus fought back in the third quarter, prevailing 18-16. The final session was intensely close, with Malta looking poised for victory after Danika Galea’s two free throws. Yet, Cyprus managed a late three-pointer, tying the game at 69-all and forcing overtime.
In overtime, Malta demonstrated their resilience and skill, particularly through the efforts of Danika and Kristy Galea. The team launched a decisive 13-0 scoring run, sealing their victory. Under coach Charles Bonnici’s guidance, the team delivered an outstanding collective performance. Amber Melgoza scored 27 points, while Danika Galea contributed 26 points and secured 14 rebounds.
With this win, Malta advances to face Albania in the semi-finals tomorrow at 6pm, bringing them one step closer to the championship title.
