Malta Works For Stronger EU Action On Energy Affordability Amidst Energy Price Hikes

Malta is calling for continued European action to protect consumers and businesses from rising energy costs while increasing efforts to improve energy efficiency and strengthen energy security.

Energy Minister Miriam Dalli participated in the Informal Meeting of EU Energy Ministers held in Dublin under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The meeting brought together EU energy ministers, representatives of the European Commission and invited partners to discuss energy affordability, innovation, disruption in energy markets, as well as European energy security and cooperation.

Minister Dalli said Europe is once again facing a challenging period for energy markets due to continued geopolitical instability and renewed pressure on energy prices.

“We have already experienced a number of crises, from Russia’s war against Ukraine to the current situation in the Middle East, which is once again placing upward pressure on energy prices. This means higher costs for electricity and fuels and, consequently, greater pressure on different Member States,” she said.

She highlighted that these challenges are particularly significant for island Member States such as Malta and Ireland, where geographical factors can create additional difficulties linked to energy security, connectivity and costs.

“For Malta, our priority remains supporting consumers, households and businesses, particularly our many self-employed and small businesses. However, this does not mean accepting unnecessary energy waste. We will push for greater efficiency in the way we use energy,” Minister Dalli said.

Energy affordability was the focus of the first working session, followed by discussions on innovation and disruption within energy markets and on European energy security and cooperation. The informal meeting is intended to support strategic discussions ahead of formal Energy Council meetings later this year.

Minister Dalli said Malta will continue advocating for European measures that recognise the different circumstances of Member States, including the specific challenges faced by island countries.

She added that investment in cleaner energy, improved efficiency and stronger infrastructure remains essential as Europe works towards a more secure and sustainable energy system.

“At a time when energy prices are again under pressure, we need to look at what measures can be taken at European level to support Member States, consumers and businesses, while continuing the transition towards a more efficient, secure and sustainable energy system,” Minister Dalli concluded.
