In 2023, Malta recorded just two intentional homicides, making it the EU country with the lowest number of such cases.

The data, published by Eurostat, underscores Malta’s consistently low rate of violent crime in comparison to other European Union member states.

Across the EU, intentional homicides rose slightly by 1.5%, from 3,872 cases in 2022 to 3,930 in 2023.

Despite this modest increase, the overall trend over the past decade remains downward, with a 15.2% decrease since 2013, when 4,635 cases were recorded.

Larger EU countries accounted for the highest absolute numbers in 2023, with France reporting 887 homicides, Germany 661, and Italy 338. On the opposite end, Malta (2), Luxembourg (4), and Cyprus (10) had the fewest recorded cases.

Eleven of the 27 EU member states registered an increase in homicides from 2022 to 2023.

France saw the highest rise, with 66 additional cases, followed by Germany (47 more) and Poland (36 more). In contrast, Romania experienced the most significant drop, with 38 fewer cases, followed by Belgium (23 fewer) and Finland (19 fewer).
