Malta With 2nd Highest Share Of Foreign Tertiary Students

In 2023, Malta recorded the second highest share of foreign students in tertiary education across the European Union, according to new figures from Eurostat.
Almost 30% of students enrolled in higher education in Malta came from abroad, placing the country just behind Luxembourg, where more than half of all tertiary students were international.
The EU average of foreign students stood at 8.4%, meaning Malta’s proportion is more than three times higher. Cyprus followed in third place with 22.3%, while countries such as Greece, Croatia and Spain reported the lowest shares, all under 5%.
Just over 3,600 students in Malta were from Europe, with 433 hailing from Africa, 278 from North America and 1,688 from Asia.
